Choosing the location

We can hold a session pretty much anywhere, as long as it’s safe for the ages involved. Tell me about the feel you want your images to have, and I can give you some suggestions. I’m open to trying new places. Don’t forget your home. It doesn’t have to look like an interior design catalog to be session-worthy. You’d be surprised at what we can do.

How is on-location photography different from a studio session?
Photos shot on-site tend to look more natural and be more in-the-moment. While they will still be family portraits, shooting outside of a studio allows for more spontaneity and variety in photos. Enjoy the time you are spending with your family and let the day unfold as it normally would. Sometimes the best photos are unexpected moments that you wouldn’t normally think to photograph.

We start outdoor sessions on weekday evenings approximately 1 hour prior to sunset. Indoor sessions can be booked during the weekday mornings and early afternoons. Our sessions are customized to fit your child’s needs. We can go to a location that’s special to your child, or we can choose one that we think will suit your vision best. Travel is included within a 20 minute radius of Manalapan, NJ. Travel beyond is offered as an optional add-on.

If we are on location, we will move around from place to place to capture and utilize a variety of colors, textures, scenery, and light. If we are shooting in your home, I will show up a little early, and I will want to look *everywhere* (even bathrooms) to find the best light. We may have to move furniture, decorations, etc. It is helpful if you tidy up before I arrive, but the house certainly does not need to be spotless.

I move quickly and change my mind a lot, so bear with me. It’s not going to be stiff and formal. On location, we will probably walk around and chat and stop at spots I think would photograph nicely. I’ll direct you if needed, but, most often, you look your best when you’re interacting naturally. In our very Pinterest-inspired culture, it’s understandable that you may come with some ideas you’ve seen elsewhere. I will certainly try a handful of them, but it is also important to me to stay true to my own artistic style as well. If you have any specific ideas in mind, please tell me before the session, so I can be sure to come prepared.

I love personalizing sessions by incorporating a few of your children’s favorite toys or activities at this age. Examples include but aren’t limited to a football, team jersey, stuffed animal, or blankie.

Rescheduling is usually a last resort due to a very full calendar. If someone is sick, however, let me know as soon as you can so we can reschedule. I will always reschedule baby and kids sessions if I am ill.

I do complete retouching on all of your proofs, so please don’t worry about minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, etc.

Weather reports can’t always be trusted, so unless you hear otherwise from me, our session is still on (some of the best light is on a cloudy day). However, if it’s storming, we’ll need to find another time or day.
